Summary: Althea watches the Tribute Parade from the comfort of her own home and she has some thoughts about District Eight's costumes this year. (This is why Capitol citizens and District residents aren't supposed to be friends.)

Notes #2: I always thought that the movies did District Eight dirty with their chariot ride costumes.
Taffeta’s chariot outfit is the ugliest effing thing I’ve ever seen and not just because I’m seeing red.
This is supposed to be Taffy’s big moment, her introduction to the Capitol! The Reaping does not count. There’s always a lot of crying at the Reaping and, honestly, almost everybody has tuned out by the time the broadcast gets to Eight anyway. District Eight hasn’t had a victor since the 57th Hunger Games. That was the year I was born. Unless there’s some drama or excitement, most people only pay attention to the Career districts.
There was a whole thing in Twelve this year that totally stole any chance Taffy had at getting noticed before now. I saw it on the replays. Volunteers aren’t usually that big a deal. It’s pretty common in One and Two, sometimes even Four, but Twelve? I don’t remember anyone volunteering in Twelve, like, ever. Twelve hasn’t had a victor since the last Quarter Quell, that funny drunk. I only know that because the replays showed him falling off the stage. He’s never brought a victor home. That girl who volunteered is going to die here. Tragic but some people love a doomed underdog.
So, between the District Twelve girl volunteering and the tributes from Two making googly eyes at each other, it feels like nobody but me even noticed Taffeta Lowell, female tribute from District Eight.
And now Taffy’s parade costume isn’t just forgettable. It’s atrocious.
Hesione Heavensbee has absolutely fucked it. She had one job. Eight’s tributes always had the best looks when Reneseme Phipps was the lead stylist. Last year, she had them in bustles and this fabric that looked white and gold or blue and black depending on the lighting and it was all anyone could talk about.
This year, Taffy and the boy from her District, Odysseus Fuller, are dressed in matching pink and blue jester costumes made from tacky-ass sequins and cheap polyester. I don’t know what Hesione was thinking. It’s not like she has to pay out of pocket for the materials? and she could afford it. She's a Heavensbee. I’m going to lose my shit next time I see her.
The volunteer girl from Twelve and the boy with her look like they’re on fire. Twelve’s speciality is mining and they look better than Eight? you know, the textiles district? Even as Taffy and Odysseus’s chariot pulls up in front of the Presidential Palace, the cameras keep cutting to Twelve and their fiery costumes. There isn’t even a close-up on Taffy’s face so I have no way to know what she’s feeling.
We all know that Hesione only got the stylist job because she’s a Heavensbee, but come on. She graduated from the academy less than a month ago and they made her head stylist for a whole District? Hesione can’t even sew by hand but I still expected better than this mess. I know Hesione has better taste than this. Her outfit today looks fantastic, if a little over the top. She's wearing this gorgeous pink silk gown with blue butterflies on her dress and in her hair. I guess she just didn’t care because Taffy and Odysseus are District kids?
It’s a relief that I’m watching the Chariot rides at home alone. All of my friends are downtown, partying and watching the chariots roll up to the Palace. Well, all of my friends except Taffeta Lowell, who is on one of those chariots. I couldn’t watch her come in surrounded by people who don’t care so I told Felicia Whimsiwick that I was still hungover from the Reaping party. That wasn’t entirely a lie: I drank a lot after Aelia Lockhart called Taffy’s name. My head hasn’t stopped hurting since.
The chariot from Twelve finally pulls up in front of the Palace and their costumes are the best this year by far. Nobody expected the new Twelve stylist to set his tributes on fire but Hesione has no excuse. Taffy and Odysseus’s costumes are the worst in the parade and Hesione will have hell to pay when I get my hands on her.
