I finally got an OK photo of Kohaku with her Lafufu (Dada, Have a Seat series). She wasn't cooperating when I posted Ichīro with his Lafufu the other day.
I picked Ichīro's Sisi because that's my favorite but I picked Kohaku's Dada because her favorite color is pink.
The characters I imagine for Ichīro and Kohaku are both neurodivergent - e.g., Ichī always wears that hat and Kohaku is often posed fiddling with her hair or holding it up by her mouth. (When I was a little younger than their characters (11), I used to chew on my hair as a stim.) This wasn't intentional because I don't "shell" dolls but, for example with Kohaku, I like posing her in ways where her hands are really visible (e.g., [1], [2], [3]) because I think she has cute hands. Then, by repetition, it became part of her character.
The first shot I got today that I thought was good enough to edit, I wouldn't've normally uploaded - it just looks off in a way I didn't notice while I was taking pictures but became obvious while I edited the exposure and contrast. I'm not the best at posing my dolls but I try to make it look nice. Her wrist looks twisted around uncomfortably and she's just not in character in this picture, so I didn't want to use it for this post. (I uploaded it to Flickr so I could explain this.)
I tried again, thinking about the character. She's shy and she plays with her hair to stim. Remembering to pose my dolls in-character - and thinking of different poses for different dolls! - is more involved than just making sure that Ichī has his hat (and I wasn't even consistent with that until recently).
I have poor proprioception and terrible posture and I really struggled when I cosplayed because of it. I looked awful and I felt awkward trying to imitate the character's poses. The best pictures of me cosplaying are 1) mid-jump, when you don't really have time to be uncomfortable, 2) while I was putting my boots back on and not really thinking about being photographed, and 3) fixing Koji's hair and not knowing someone was taking a picture. Which is to say… sometimes it's hard to pose my dolls but some of that comes from the strengths/weaknesses of the design and sometimes it just… happens. I never pose Nene playing with her hair, her poses are open and expansive and that builds her character (e.g., [1], [2], [3]): tour guide Nene is here to show you around Tokyo!
I originally planned to post this to
matsushima but I thought it could go here on
pineisland as a process notes post. This is supposed to be my (public) junk drawer, not just for fanfic and annotations.

This post is process-based research for that project.
P.S. Future me, you crossposted this photo to
