District 8 Update 69/11

Paisley Webster is the Capitol Daily correspondent from District 8! The winner of the 69th Hunger Games, Mx. Webster’s monthly columns give Capitol Daily readers a unique glimpse into District life.

Snow in 8 isn’t a cause for celebration.

When it snows in District 8, you have to leave early so you’re not late for your shift. The streets are slick and the bus is slow but that’s no excuse. The factories only stop during lockdowns and the Peacekeepers aren’t going to put us on lockdown for a little unpleasant weather. The Capitol needs new textiles and so the factories run twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, except on holidays: the Reaping and the Victory Tour.

Look like a victor and win the day!
It’s important to be punctual to ensure the smooth running of the textile mills. If you’re late, your pay is docked; miss the first bell too many times and you will be reassigned. But even if you are reassigned, you know your children can take tesserae. They’ll always have enough to survive thanks to the generosity of our Capitol.

No, I didn’t love the snow. Not before my Victory Tour.

I could see the flakes through the train windows and I thought about the beautiful warm boots provided by my stylist, the fabulous Arachne Cardew. No wet slush would seep through the expertly crafted, hand stitched Pleather - unlike animal leather, Pleather is waterproof! I knew I would be cozy despite the cold weather.

When I stepped off the train, all I could do was gasp. You might have seen the propo of me staring around the square. I had never seen anything so beautiful as the snow on the Capitol buildings, delicate as lace and glistening like glass beads in the sun.

Panem is blessed with natural beauty from sea to shining sea. Even in my own humble District 8, the sunsets are like nothing you have ever seen. My merino wool arm warmers are inspired by the beautiful deep red sunsets in District 8 and my family’s tradition of cable knitting, passed down from mother to daughter since before the Dark Days. You can buy genuine District 8-made cable knit accessories at Arachne Cardew’s studio just off Temple Square!

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have seen more of Panem on my Victory Tour and I look forward to visiting the Capitol again next summer for the 70th Hunger Games.
